RKL Helps Construction and Real Estate Leaders Build Strong Foundation

Drawing on its multi-faceted expertise, RKL recently helped owners and executives from the real estate, construction and architecture/engineering industries build a strong foundation for growth.

As part of its continued focus on the sector, RKL hosted more than 70 industry leaders for its inaugural Real Estate Development & Construction Growth & Profitability Forum, held on January 18, 2018, at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey. Centered around actionable ideas and insights, RKL experts shared their expertise on timely topics like succession planning and developing next-level leadership. Rounding out the agenda were presentations from a former leader of Pennsylvania’s Department of General Services on doing business with the commonwealth and a regional attorney on dispute avoidance and resolution.

To provide attendees with even more valuable insights, RKL included an additional presentation to the agenda – an industry specific recap of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. RKL’s tax experts not only provided an overview of the new law, but also highlighted opportunities for proactive tax planning to minimize burdens now and into the future.

RKL Welcomes New Partners and Managers

New team members join RKL as result of merger with Padden, Guerrini & Associates

MECHANICSBURG, PA (January 8, 2018) – RKL LLP today announced that six management-level professionals have joined the firm as part of its merger with Padden, Guerrini & Associates, which took effect January 1, 2018.

The new team members, which include four partners and two managers, will be primarily based out of RKL’s Mechanicsburg office located at 91 Cumberland Parkway and serve clients throughout the firm’s geographic footprint in Pennsylvania and beyond.

  • David Padden, CPA, MBA: Padden joins RKL as a Partner in the firm’s Tax Services Group, and brings nearly four decades of experience providing accounting, tax and consulting services to business and individual clients. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Grove City College and an MBA from the Univeristy of Southern Mississippi. Padden resides in Mechanicsburg with his wife.
  • Karin M. Guerrini, CPA, CFE, CGMA: Guerrini brings more than three decades of experience in bank and credit union auditing to her new role as Partner in RKL’s Audit Services Group and member of the firm’s Financial Services Industry Group. She received her bachelor’s degree from Penn State University, and lives in Harrrisburg.
  • Allyson R. Hornbaker, CPA: Joining RKL as a Partner in the Audit Services Group, Hornbaker delivers assurance and management advisory services to clients, including financial statement audits and assistance with government reimbursement and HUD-sponsored projects. She received her bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, and resides in Enola with her husband and three children.
  • Stefanie M. Knaub: Knaub joins RKL as a Partner the firm’s nationally recognized Senior Living Services Consulting Group, specializing in all aspects of medical billing, including reimbursement, accounts receivable, policy and procedure review and operational improvement. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Albright College and resides in Dillsburg with her husband.
  • Rick Miller, CPA: As a Manager in RKL’s Audit Services Group, Miller has more than two decades of accounting experience serving the assurance and regulatory compliance needs of not-for-profit, senior living and commercial clients. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Mennonite University, and lives in Dillsburg with his wife and their son.
  • Nathan J. Babinsack, CPA: Babinsack joins RKL as a Manager in the firm’s Audit Services Group, bringing more than a decade of experience helping senior living providers and not-for-profit organizations manage regulatory compliance, financial record-keeping and more. He holds a bachelor’s from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, and resides in Newville with his wife and their two children.

Barrett, CPA/ABV, CVA, CGMA, achieved an advanced level of professional certification in business exit planning and value acceleration. Barrett, a Partner in RKL’s Business Consulting Services Group, recently earned the Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) credential from the Exit Planning Institute.

Established in 2007, the CEPA program is the most widely endorsed exit planning designation in the world. To earn the CEPA credential, Barrett completed a comprehensive curriculum of individual study, hands-on instruction and a proctored examination, specifically designed for business advisors to privately held companies.

One of the region’s most skilled and highly credentialed business consultants and valuation experts, Barrett has three decades of experience assisting closely held companies and their owners with exit strategy formulation, ownership interest transfers, business valuations and succession plan development.

Barrett holds the Chartered Global Management Accountant designation and an Accreditation in Business Valuation from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She also belongs to the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. She resides in Maidencreek Township, Pennsylvania with her husband.

RKL Delivers Economic and Financial Update to 500 Regional Business Leaders

Nearly 500 business owners, financial executives and accounting professionals gained the updates and insights to prepare for a successful new year at RKL’s annual Tax and A&A Update.

Held December 12 at the Lancaster County Convention Center, the 2017 installment of the region’s most anticipated CPE event provided attendees with valued continuing professional education credits and networking opportunities with RKL advisors and leaders from a wide range of business types, sizes and industries.

The full-day agenda kicked off with an economic update from Anirban Basu, Chairman and CEO of Sage Policy Group Inc., who shared insights into the global, national and regional economies and facilitated an always entertaining understanding of critical aspects of the economy, such as the performance of financial, labor and real estate markets.

RKL tax advisors then offered attendees the most up-to-date information on federal tax legislation, from both the business and individual perspective, and highlighted planning opportunities for the year ahead. On a state level, key tax rates, credits and incentives were discussed, as well as initiatives undertaken by the PA Department of Revenue. The afternoon session focused on accounting updates, including strategies to manage banking relationships in a complex environment and an overview of recently issued and currently proposed accounting standards and how they could impact businesses and organizations.

To show appreciation for the strong support of its clients and friends, RKL held a variety of trivia and prize drawings throughout the day, featuring prizes ranging from local retail gift cards to an Apple Watch to a vacation voucher, just in time for the holidays. After a productive day of education, attendees enjoyed a cocktail hour to conclude the event on a festive note.

Mink is also a key member of RKL’s Real Estate Development & Construction Industry Group, and he bolstered his industry expertise and relevance by achieving the elite Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP®) designation in 2015.

Since joining RKL in 2012, Mink has played a key role in the firm’s professional development, quality control and continuing education standards as a member of the firm’s Audit & Accounting Committee.

Mink is an active member and leader of several civic, community benefit and professional development organizations. Earlier this year, he was installed as Treasurer of the South Central Chapter of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and was named Vice President of the York East Rotary Club. Mink also serves as Board Member and Treasurer for the Farm & Natural Lands Trust of York County and sits on the Annual Campaign Cabinet for the United Way of York County.

Mink received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from York College of Pennsylvania. A licensed Certified Public Accountant in Pennsylvania since 2007, he is a member of both the PICPA and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). For the third year in a row, leaders from the manufacturing and distribution sectors tapped into RKL’s diverse expertise and business acumen at the firm’s exclusive industry-focused educational event. Centered around the theme “Drive Your Performance,” RKL’s 2017 Manufacturing & Distribution Growth & Profitability Forum, held on September 26 at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, equipped the record-setting crowd of more than 130 owners and executives with valuable insights and practical ideas to tackle the fast-paced challenges confronting the industry.

Keynote speaker Mary Ann Mauldwin, Chief Operations Officer of Roush Yates Engines, kicked off the event in high gear, sharing how she relies on innovation, education and efficiency to keep this leading-edge engine development company at the forefront of the racing industry. Mauldwin offered real world examples of the challenges and opportunities facing companies in high-growth mode like Roush Yates and discussed the strategies and tactics that help her pave the way for continued success.

The Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) has named RKL’s Kelly M. Godfrey, CPA, and D. Hunter Mink, CPA, CCIFP®, among its 2017 Young Leaders, in recognition of their positive impact on the accounting profession and their communities.

Godfrey and Mink, along with their fellow Young Leader Award recipients, were honored at the PICPA Leadership Conference, held on September 18, 2017, in Harrisburg.

A manager in RKL’s Audit Services Group, Godfrey serves the accounting and assurance needs of clients in the not-for-profit and public sectors. In addition to her public accounting experience, she also has seven years of commercial operations management experience. Godfrey holds a B.S. in Sociology/Criminal Justice from Bloomsburg University and a B.S. in Accounting from Lebanon Valley College.

Godfrey is an active PICPA member, serving on the Reading Chapter’s Emerging CPAs Committee, as well as the Local Government Accounting and Auditing, Not-for-Profit and Ethics committees. She also serves as a loaned accountant for the United Way of Berks County Annual Campaign and volunteers as a tutor for the organization’s Ready.Set.Read! program. Godfrey lives in Lebanon with her husband and three daughters.

In his role as Audit Services Group manager, Mink plans and supervises engagements for clients in a variety of industries. He primarily focuses on serving the consulting and assurance needs of the architecture/engineering (A/E) sector and the construction industry. He expanded his relevance and expertise in this sector by earning the Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP®) designation in 2015. Mink also sits on RKL’s Audit & Accounting Committee, helping to manage the firm’s professional development, continuing education and quality control standards. He earned his B.S in Accounting from York College.

Mink recently elevated his PICPA engagement to a leadership role, when he was installed as Treasurer of the South Central Chapter in May of this year. A lifelong York County resident, Mink resides in York with his wife and twin daughters.
