Even though they manufacture them, Travis and Nick Eby have never been trailers.
Leading a third generation, family-owned company started by their grandfather in 1938, the unstoppable pair has built M.H. EBY into one of North America’s top producers of agriculture and equine transportation trailers with help from their advisors at RKL.
A Tradition of Innovation
From its beginnings in a small, Central PA woodworking shop, M.H. EBY built its success on innovative products known for their quality and durability. Grandfather Menno H. Eby, Sr. carefully crafted wood livestock bodies, carving out a niche for fine craftsmanship and custom features.
In the 1970s, his son, Menno H. Eby, Jr., pioneered the switch of the M.H. EBY line of products to aluminum. Through the use of this corrosion-resistant material and the introduction of the company’s innovative designs, M.H. EBY set new standards in aluminum agriculture and equine transportation equipment and expanded with a new manufacturing facility in Ohio.
Driving Ahead Toward New Opportunities
With sons Travis and Nick now part of the family business, M.H. EBY forged ahead, opening a third manufacturing facility in Iowa, a sales and service center in Indiana and growing a sales territory that stretches to the Midwest and Canada.
When the company experienced some unforeseen management changes, they reached out to RKL to provide interim CFO services and help fill the role. Throughout the years, including tough economic times for the manufacturing industry in 2008, RKL Partner Jeff Horst became the company’s go-to advisor and an integral part of the Eby team.
Jeff and the RKL team not only identified opportunities to save tax dollars and meet compliance requirements, but also provided valuable guidance on how to improve operations, handle growth and geographic expansion and navigate succession issues. With our deep bench of tax, accounting and business consulting talent, the Ebys’ increasingly complex needs – including business valuations, cost segregation studies, R&E tax credits, state and local tax planning and more – were all met by the RKL team.
There for the Long Haul
In 2012, brothers Travis and Nick officially took majority ownership of M.H. EBY with father Menno still contributing his decades of wisdom and business acumen to the company. As unstoppable as ever, M.H. EBY continues to move forward with a mindset toward innovation and quality. Giving them the tax, accounting and business consulting horsepower they need for the long haul, RKL looks forward to being a continued part of Travis and Nick’s journey.
