James CRAFT & Son
Growing up in her family’s mechanical contracting company, Vicki Kearns, like her father, was drawn to business.
At only 11 years old, Vicki had a remarkably clear vision for her future: she would study accounting.
What she hadn’t predicted was that she would go on to serve as CFO and treasurer of James CRAFT & Son, the company founded by her great-grandfather over 100 years ago that would grow into a regional leader with 100+ employees. After all, leadership positions in the family business were not a given for Vicki and her four brothers. They spent their high school and college years sweeping shop floors, washing the company’s signature red trucks and answering the phones and eventually came to own and operate the family business.
“If you were going to make something of yourself, it was because you worked for it,” Vicki says.
Dedication, integrity and quality are important to the Crafts. So it makes sense that Vicki expects these qualities from her accounting and tax advisory team. Throughout the years, Vicki has partnered with accounting and tax professionals from RKL, who she endorses for their integrity, professionalism and responsiveness.
A Mutual Understanding and Respect.
Vicki’s RKL engagement team handles the annual financial statement attestation, tax work, pension audits and ongoing business and personal advisory and planning for James CRAFT & Son. Like most good relationships, her partnership with Partners Duane Moyer and Robert Gratalo is built on mutual understanding and respect.
“We’ve had more of a personal relationship with the CPAs we’ve worked with,” Vicki says. “They took the time to understand our business and me. They know my business and our family dynamics.”
RKL’s experience in serving family-owned businesses is a benefit to the Craft family. In addition to her role with James CRAFT & Son, Vicki oversees the financial management of several family-owned business entities. She appreciates Rob and Duane’s thorough explanations and thoughtful advice on a range of issues, from the latest accounting pronouncements to succession planning. From RKL leadership to the professionals assigned to the company’s engagement, RKL’s quality and integrity has been consistent.
“I’ve had a very good experience. Everyone who has been on our engagement has been friendly, courteous and efficient,” Vicki says.
A Vision for the Next Generation.
With a fifth generation of Crafts now involved in the business, including her son, Vicki anticipates the next generation carrying on the Craft tradition of dedication, integrity and quality. At RKL, we’re confident that these shared qualities will mean continued success and a lasting partnership with the Crafts through the years.
