8:00 a.m. – 8:50 a.m. – Tax Reform: Understanding the New Tax Law and its Impact on Your Organization and Donors
Ruthann Woll, Principal, RKL Tax Services Group
The recently enacted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will impact every organization and every individual. Do you know how it will impact your nonprofit’s bottom line? Attendees of this session will be equipped with proactive tax strategies to minimize the impact of this new legislation on your organization, including Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. The EITC program has long promoted expanded educational opportunities for students by providing tax credits to businesses that contribute to registered scholarship organizations and educational improvement organizations. Recent changes to Pennsylvania’s tax code expanded portions of the EITC program in several key ways that make these tax credits more accessible to businesses and their owners. Attendees will be prepared to apply for the EITC program and reap its fundraising benefits. (Qualifies for 1 tax CPE credit)
8:50 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. – Break
9:00 a.m. – 9:50 a.m. – Organizational Agility: The Key to Optimizing Financial and Operational Performance
Gretchen Naso, Practice Leader, RKL Business Consulting Services
Danielle Hoffer, Practice Leader, RKL Human Resources Consulting
Regulatory changes, policy shifts and growing competition from other social sector organizations for funding, talent and influence headline the challenges that lay ahead for nonprofit organizations. Current research indicates that the agility of an organization affects how it responds to and weathers these kinds of challenges. In this session, attendees will be able to define the concept of organizational agility, identify the characteristics of agile organizations and apply strategies to achieve better operational and financial performance in their own organizations. (Qualifies for 1 business management & organization – non-technical CPE credit)
9:50 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. – Break
10:00 a.m. – 10:50 a.m. – Avoiding Mistakes in Common Nonprofit Governance and Organizational Practices
Andrew Rusniak, Associate, McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC
Do your bylaws say what you think they say? Do the right people sign off on your organization’s decisions? Do your directors and officers understand their duties? Do you know how to identify and deal with conflicts of interest? Are your executive compensation policies acceptable? Nearly every aspect of nonprofit governance is regulated or controlled, and mistakes can be costly. Attendees of this session will be able to identify and avoid common pitfalls and apply best practices to ensure adequate compliance. (Qualifies for 1 business management & organization – non-technical CPE credit)
10:50 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Break
11:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. – Best Practices in Institutional Asset Management
Nick Boyer, Chief Investment Strategist, RKL Wealth Management
Most nonprofit leaders are intensely focused on advancing the mission of their organization and serving their communities. Amidst these important objectives, it can be easy to lose sight of the details, goals and fiduciary obligations surrounding the management of the organization’s financial assets. Through a deeper understanding of institutional asset management, including governance, policies, strategy and implementation, attendees will be able to establish an effective governance framework and avoid common pitfalls. Attendees will also learn how to select and execute appropriate investment strategies and find their “organizational alpha.” (Qualifies for 1 specialized knowledge CPE credit)
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Lunch and Peer Discussion
You will hear throughout the day the many new challenges the not-for-profit industry is facing in 2018. During lunch, members of the RKL team will facilitate topics for peer discussion to determine best practices for overcoming these challenges. Lean on our team and your peers to position your organization for success in the future.
